My name is Heidi Strow and I’ve created this webpage to share with you my two passions in this life, hiking and good food. I have tried many things but I keep finding myself going back to these two basics. As a child I was always running around in my Mom’s garden and eating what I knew I could so I wouldn’t have to go inside. I also took my first cooking class when I was in elementary school and got my first cookbook for Christmas in 1985, when I was eight! In childhood I was constantly being taken backpacking and camping. I wandered around in the woods until hunger called me home. My Dad caught trout in the Sierra Nevadas and fried them up in a cast iron pan over the campfire, these are some of my fondest memories. In college I studied Environmental Science and ended up going to Alaska and living the seasonal life, hiking and exploring the last frontier until I accepted a job at Yosemite National Park.
After more hiking and more exploring I decided to work on an organic farm in Southern Oregon for a couple of seasons until I had learned all that I could. I can now safely say that I know how to grow, harvest, cook and compost my food. When I was 21 I had become a vegetarian after seeing a PETA video on public broadcasting. I also worked in a vegetarian restaurant throughout college where I learned so much more about cooking. I now work as a cook at a vegan restaurant in Portland Oregon and have decided to share with you all that I have learned throughout the years about vegetarian and vegan cooking. I also want to explore the trails of the Pacific Northwest and share them with you.
I have loved the Pacific Northwest for as long as I can remember, even though I grew up in Southern California, and I want to share that love with you, my readers. So come on this journey with me as I create recipes and go for hikes, because for me, that’s what this life is all about and I want to spend my life doing just that.
